Newton Abbot in Devon
The lovely town of Newton Abbot made its move in the early Victorian era as the British railway built a station yard in town. Today, the population is just over 23,000 people.
Things to do during the day
THE thing to do in Newton Abbot is to go to Trago Mills and to Trago Family Fun Park. Sitting on 100 acres, Trago Mills ( http://www.trago.co.uk/ ) is a shopping complex of three major retailers combined with restaurants and other individual retail shops. Every Tuesday and Thursday is the farmer’s market which features fresh homegrown food! The fun park is great fun for the kids as it features a small scale locomotive keeping in touch with the heritage of Newton Abbot. The train makes quite a journey around Trago Mills and around a couple of small lakes on the property. A lovely day can be spent with the kids.
Stover Country Park is another lovely piece of countryside with plenty of green space and a lovely lake. A perfect spot for a picnic after a day of shopping at Trago. Bring the dog and the kids and enjoy the wildlife and a little time with nature.
The Llama walk is a must do in Newton Abbot. You get the reigns of your very own llama to take on a tour of the countryside including a picnic lunch. An unusual but enjoyable day for sure.
Things to do at night
The Cider Bar is the happening place at Newton Abbot after dark. Although it may look a little suspect on the outside, inside is a unique and rustic bar with barrels of cider and fruit wine neatly stacked behind the counter. Good company and good drinks, enjoy!
The Saracens Head ( http://www.saracensheadnewtonabbot.co.uk/ ) is another traditional English Pub. Maybe a little more traditional the Cider Bar. But it is still as authentic as it was over 150 years ago. And sneak out back, there is a quaint little garden to sit at outside if you like.
If you prefer a bit more of the crowded and lively nightlife, head back to Trago Mills and enjoy the many restaurants in the park. Enjoy a drink while strolling the walkways and the lakes.
The weather stays pretty mild throughout much of the year. The winters are not overly cold, nothing a good downs jacket couldn't take care of. Summer heats up to a comfortable day for shorts and makes for a comfortable day outdoors.
Newton Abbot is a comfortable 3 hour train ride from London. Sit back, enjoy the countryside, and travel into a bit of history as you pull into the area of the original train yards from the 1800s. The train will be your friend to visit other towns in this region of the UK. Locally, taxis are plentiful and there are even horse and buggy rides on the warmer summer days.
