Picturesque Ballater in Aberdeenshire, is a silver granite village situated next to the River Dee in the heart of Royal Deeside, enveloped in the Highland countryside of the Cairngorms National Park.

Getting to Ballater is not easy, the nearest train station is Bridgetown Railway Station, 19 miles away, and the nearest airport is Aberdeen, 38 miles away. Local bus services operate between Ballater, Aberdeen and Bridgetown. Ballater certainly does play hard to get.

Ballater is well known for its royal connections, Balmoral Castle the queens little holiday home being 8 miles away. Check before you call in for a visit though, as her majesty only lets you take peek at certain times of the year. This year (2014) the grounds, gardens and exhibitions are open daily from 1st April until 31st July. I believe she is doing a little spring cleaning the rest of the year.

Knowledgeable local residents, full-time rangers and professional mountain guides lead the walks allowing you to experience magnificence views.   Considering how long it probably took you to get to Ballater these walks should be a doddle.

Ballater does not have a lot of night life, everyone is probably asleep due to all the walking. However it has its fair share of pubs and restaurant that surprisingly mostly serve Scottish food. Worth a mention though, ‘The Prince of Wales’ is a cosy pub with a good selection of whisky. If you do fancy a rave you will have go to Aberdeenshire but at 38 miles away it will cost you an awful lot in taxi fare.
