Bury Activities and things to do
Bury is a town in Greater Manchester. The town is known for its industrial history and it used to be home to a thriving textile industry.
The town is close to the western Pennines and it is well-known for its popular town market. Major landmarks include the Peel Tower and Bury Castle.
If you want to get out and about to see more of the surrounding areas, Lancashire, Cheshire, Leeds and Bradford are all close by.
Getting to Bury
Bury is can be accessed by road, plane, tram and coach.
For car travel, follow the M60 and then turn off at Junction 17 and follow the A56 to Manchester, or use the M66 and turn off at Junction 2 and onto the A58.
The nearest airport is Manchester Airport. You can then travel into Manchester via bus or train then get the tram or bus to Bury.
National Express has a bus service from London, but this is probably the most expensive option.
What’s on and Where to Go
After visiting the Castle and the Peel Tower, there is the Bury Art Gallery and Museum, Burrs Country Farm and Holcombe Hill to see. The historic East Lancashire Railway is also in Bury as is the Fusilier Museum.
The local theatre, The Met, puts on a good selection of shows, including productions and live music acts.
Bury and Greater Manchester have a varied programme of festivals throughout the year. Bury Light Night is held in October and presents a dazzling display of light installations, performances and music.
The Deadbolt Festival is in August and the Manchester Food and Drink Festival is in September.
The Burrs Activity Centre has team building activities such as archery, rafting, canoeing and rock climbing.
The Vertical Ice Chill Wall in nearby Manchester offers indoor rock and ice climbing.
Strike Ten Bowling offers ten lanes of pin bowling. There is also a bar there and they serve food if you feel like getting something to eat afterwards.
There is an extremely active nightlife in Bury and plenty of pubs, clubs and restaurants to choose from. The Parkfield Inn is in Whitefield and The Sugarvine Restaurant serves affordable Italian food.
The Met is the place to go for music, film and live entertainment.
