Basingstoke, Hampshire, United Kingdom
Nestled in Hampshire in the United Kingdom is the town of Basingstoke, at the valley that creates the source of the River Loddon. This town is extremely affluent, with and includes suburbs, financial hubs, shopping centers, and more. This town, although now a modern place, has deep historical roots. Acclaimed classic novelist Jane Austen grew up close by; Liz Hurley was born in Basingstoke; and poet Thomas Warton grew up here. Shakespeare even mentioned Basingstoke in Henry IV Part Two, as did composers Gilbert and Sullivan in one of their operettas.
Getting to Basingstoke
Basingstoke is extremely popular for commuters. It’s only a 45-minute train ride to Waterloo, and has close access to the M3 and M4 motorways, and is about an hour drive to London and Southampton. The main train line that runs from London to Southampton has a station in Basingstoke, and the nearby town of Reading.
Much of Basingstoke’s activities are historical and scenic sites. One popular site is Basing House, an exhibition of ruins that were once a former Tudor palace that was destroyed in a siege. You can spend the day exploring the archaeology of The Silchester Roman Town, or the human silhouettes in the Crockford Lane Roundabout. If you’re looking for something …unique… visit the Wote Street Willy, which is proudly displayed as the largest statue of a “willy” in Britain. Other popular sites include Mike Reddaway’s Ancestral Home, The Willis Museum, the War Memorial park, or the Milestones Museum. If you’re looking for an outdoor getaway, visit Eastrop Park for rowing, paddleboats, and a café.
Basingstoke After Dark
For a mostly suburban, affluent, town with such a rich historical background, Basingstoke surprisingly does have some options for nightlife! The most popular for locals and visitors are the Wonderland Nightclub, Liquid Nightclub, and the Plush Lounge Bar nightclub, all of these venues having various events and themed nights. Some smaller bars and pubs include JD Wetherspoon, The Academy Basingstoke, Bang Bar, The Crown Inn, The Millstone, The Barley Mow, Lloyds No. 1 Bar, and many, many more! If plain old bars and lounges aren’t your thing, check out Basingstoke Blues Club to enjoy some live blues bands over drinks, or try visiting Sanctuary Live Basingstoke, which has different themed nights including live gig nights and alternative music nights. So, as you can see, although Basingstoke isn’t the liveliest of towns in terms of nightlife, you can definitely find something to do!
