Dartford in Kent

Dartford gained its popularity in medieval times as a market hub.  Today it is mostly a residential suburb serving the greater London area.  It is a short 16 miles into London where the majority of activities are available within easy commute.  It is probably best noted for two of its native sons, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards.

Things to do during the day

Central Park is the place to go during the day in Dartford.  The River Darent runs through it and offers a piece of serenity.  There are walking trails and children’s play areas.  There is a wet area where children can run through fountains and splash pads.  Being so close to the town center and its shops, this is a nice retreat for a picnic lunch.  In the spring and summer months they spend a lot of time and effort to keep thousands of flowers in bloom in decorative flower beds around the park.

St. John's Jerusalem is a lovely park and a National Heritage sight.  It is only open on Wednesdays but is well worth the effort to visit.  Lovely gardens, an historic knights chapel, and lovely flower gardens make this a getaway from the hustle and bustle of London proper.

Things to do at night

The Orchard Theatre offers professional theatrical performances of all varieties.  Small enough to be intimate yet big enough to be grand, each seat offers good views of the stage.  The one criticism that is universal is that the building does not have air conditioning and can be a bit warm in the summer months.

Being so close to the major metropolitan area, most of the evening activities are spent in London.  There are many commuter options available to take you into town.  As you can imagine, London is world famous for theater, fine dining, and world famous historical treasures.

Transport

There are three large car parks near downtown for easy parking and commuting into London.  Next door you will find the train station and three Transport For London bus routes that service Dartford into London.    Fastrack buses start from there and provide non-stop service into London.  There is also a rail line from downtown Dartford that takes commuters into London.

Weather

As the UK is so close to the ocean coast, temperatures are fairly moderate throughout the seasons.  Winter can get as low as 34 degrees Fahrenheit while summer months stays in the mid-70s.  Of course, beware the famous London fog in the winter months.
