Lasswade in Lothians
Lasswade is a civil Parish and village in Midlothian or the North Esk River just 9 miles from the Edinburgh city center. Although most visitors to the area prefer the much brighter lights of Edinburgh Lasswade is a great place to select as your home base if you want to be close to the nightlife of the city while staying somewhere much more relaxed and quiet.
While you can get to Lasswade by coach or car, it is best to hire a car or bring your own, as you are going to want to see the surrounding countryside and spend some time in Edinburgh as well. Having your own transport will allow you to visit some great parks and historical sites throughout the Lothians. That's not to say that there isn't anything to do in Lasswade, there is, especially during the day time.
If you bugs don't bug you then paying a visit to Lasswade's Butterfly and Insect World ( http://www.edinburgh-butterfly-world.co.uk/ ) will be a real treat. If you purchase a full days ticket you can even get in on some of the fish and animal feeding as well as watch some training sessions. You can even get up close to such creatures as a Tarantula and a centipede.
For those, who are bit squismish there is always a bit of horseback riding or a round of golf to be enjoyed.
When it comes to eating, Lasswade does itself proud Both the Papermill and the Northfield house hotel offer a nice dining room, great food and quality service. There are also four other restaurants to choose from some better than others.
With the exception of a few pubs, there really isn't much that Lasswade has to offer in the way of nightlife, although this is a good thing for those who want a few evenings of peace and quiet during their vacation. Since Edinburgh is only 9 miles away and has several night clubs and lively bars, that you can visit on those nights you want a bit of excitement the quiet of Lasswade is much more appreciated.
Although Lasswade itself, seems to lack any annual events or festivals, that isn't to say that you won't be able to enjoy attending a festival. Edinburgh has several special festivals and events including, Hogmanay (Scotland's New Years Celebration) Jazz and Blues festival, a Fringe Festival and much more. Many other towns in the Lothains also have annual events that may be worth attending if you happen to be visiting the area when any of these festivals or events are being held.
While Lasswade, certainly is not considered a tourist area, it is a great place to stay during your vacation to Edinburgh and the Lothains.
