Oswestry / Croeswallt

Oswestry in Shropshire (Croesoswallt in Welsh), holds the honour of being the third largest town in Shropshire. Built around a 3000-year old hill fort now called Old Oswestry, and is one of the best preserved in the country. It was also used as a training ground for Canadian troops during the First World War.

Getting there

Located in Shropshire, near the Welsh border, Oswestry is very easy to get to from Birmingham, and other midlands towns such as Shrewsbury and Telford. From Birmingham, simply take the M6 north until you reach the M54, then follow that west until you reach Shrewsbury, then follow the M5 until you arrive at Oswestry. From London, simply follow the M1 north/M6 west to Birmingham, then follow the same route as described above. There had used to be a railway station in the town, but that closed in 1966.

For a great laugh with a group of mates, you can do karting, outdoor laser tag and paintball at Rednal Karting. Also, if you’re up for a trip to Wrexham, you could visit Tenpin Wrexham (bowling alley) and Wrexham Waterworld - a swimming pool with slides and rapids, the facility also features a fitness suite and jacuzzi, sauna and steam room. If you want a more relaxing day out, there are plenty of places to explore including the public gardens with flowers and all sorts of other flora. There are also many churches to look at including the ancient Holy Trinity Parish Church and St Oswald's Church, which was mentioned in the Domesday Book.

For a night out, the town’s nightclubs: Desire, Gibsons are adequate, and for a wider selection of bars and such, visit Shrewsbury, but that trip would require a dedicated driver.
