Before the arrival of the Railway during the 1840s, the Glastonbury Canal was the primary source of transport, running for over 23 kilometres and passing through two locks from the town to Highbridge; with the closure of the Glastonbury and Street railway station in 1966, the nearest railway station became that at Castle Cary, which unfortunately lacks a direct connection by bus to Glastonbury, with the exception of during the music festival in June.
