The Grand Pier, although devastated by a morning fire in July of 2008 is one of the town's biggest attraction. Part of it is still open to visitors while it is being renovated. Visitors are allowed to walk along most of the pier deck to see the extent of the damage done by the fire up close. Plans are now underway to restore it to its former magnificent glory.


It is situated on the Bristol Channel coast, about 20 miles south west of Bristol; extend across the coast between the large high ground of Worlebury Hill to Bleadon Hill. In the traditional county of Somerset, approximately 25 miles south west of Bristol, 35 miles west of Bath and 20 miles north of Bridgwater. It includes the suburbs of Oldmixon, West Wick and Worle.


Weston-super-Mare is a popular tourist destination, with major landmark and attractions such as the long sandy beach, the Helicopter Museum, Weston-super-Mare Museum, the Grand Pier, the SeaQuarium-aquarium and the seasonal Wheel of Weston.

  • Through Rail Weston is accessible by train; it lies on the mainline from Bristol to the South West. 
  • Through Air The nearest airport is Bristol International. It is possible to get an airport bus to Temple Meads or Parson Street railway stations in Bristol and from there take a train to Weston. Bus 121 runs direct, but it is very slow and infrequent. The quicker but more expensive option would be to take a taxi.


The town is well known amongst motocross (Motocross is a form of motorcycle racing held on enclosed off-road circuits.) enthusiasts for staging the Weston beach race every autumn. In addition, races are also held for young riders, sidecarcross riders and quad bike competitions.


All year round, an excellent lineup of events is held by the beach including a helicopter show, water skiing competitions and other races and festivals. Helidays, a helicopter display is held on the beach lawns in July. The national skiing championship is held in the same month. Afterward, the sand sculpture festival is held all summer. During this time, sand sculptors from all over the world come to show off their incredible creations. The exciting and breathtaking Weston beach race is held in October where hundreds of motorbike riders participate in daring a race over sand jumps of varying difficulties. In November, away from the water, 100 spectacular floats parade through the evening streets during the illuminated carnival.


Weston Bay provides safe swimming at high water, except at its southern edge, where there are strong currents at the mouth of the River Axe. The beach of Weston Bay lies on the western edge of the town. The upper part is sandy but the sea retreats a long way at low tide exposing large areas of mud flats. The tidal range in this part of the Bristol Channel is great, and since beach and mud flats are on a gentle slope, attempting to reach the sea at times of low tide is inadvisable as the sand gives way to mud which is very deep and has frequently resulted in loss of life over the years.
