Yeovil, Somerset, Activities & Things To Do
Yeovil is a market town on the southern boundary of Somerset. The town was even mentioned in the Domesday Book (referred to as Givele). There is a thriving livestock market and the town itself is surrounded by stunning countryside. The town centre and shopping streets have been pedestrianised.
Some say one of the most recognisable landmarks of Yeovil is “Jack the Treacle Eater”. This is a folly, an archway topped with a turret, featuring the statue on top – although it is actually located in Barwick just to the south of Yeovil.
Very close by there is the Museum of South Somerset. You can learn about local history, geology and local industries such as leather and glove making, flax and hemp production, engineering, newspaper printing and stone working. There are two theatres in Yeovil, The Octagon and The Swan.
Yeovil is accessed by the A30 and A37 and served by two railway lines. Yeovil Pen Mill is on the Bristol to Weymouth line (First Great Western Trains) and Yeovil Junction is on the London Waterloo to Exeter lines (South West Trains). Bristol Airport is the closest at 45 miles from Yeovil.
Yeovil is a town rich in community groups and events. Country pursuits and farmers’ markets, open air Shakespeare and summer solstice outdoor yoga and classic car rallies. There is the Fleet Air Museum, Dinosaur Museum, Hayes International Motor Museum and the Tank Museum.
The Ready2climb Adventure zone features an indoor climbing wall, caving activities and fun for all ages. There are plenty of outdoor play areas for children and even a ski centre. Yeovil boasts one nightclub but many bars and pubs both chains and independent.
