Getting to Know Bishopbriggs in Strathclyde
Located just outside bustling Glasgow, Bishopbriggs is a quaint residential suburb relying on its larger neighbor for providing most social and leisure activities. The town flourished after WWII as Glasgow was suffering from overpopulation. Government officials encouraged Glasgow residents to move outside of the immediate city. Today, Bishopbriggs is known for its beautiful Victorian architecture and has a population of 23,000.
Things to do
The town is home to the Leisuredrome which is a state of the art football facility that hosts games on many different levels. There are also three golf clubs of which the Bishopbriggs Golf Club is the oldest and most popular. The Forth and Clyde Canal is adjacent to the Golf Club and has nice walking and biking trails.
The main shopping district is known as The Village and is basically the city center. In all there are about a dozen stores and a supermarket that make up this shopping area. Of course, there are many independent retailers offering goods around the town.
Where to Eat and Drink
There are only a few restaurants in town. The Avenue seems to be the place to go for a nice upscale dinner and drink. It is located in the city center. Frankie and Benny’s is one of the most popular restaurants is town but the reviews are mixed. The Crow Tavern is also a good place to go for dinner and a drink. Again, the reviews are not raving. You might be well served to go to the local Domino’s pizza which receives 5 star reviews. It would seem that most people pop into Glasgow for a more varied, and perhaps, palatable dinner selection.
There is bus service from Bishopbriggs that runs in and around town and into Glasgow. A train line runs just on the edge of town which services many other nearby cities. There are several major highways that run near Glasgow which are easily accessible from town. Even the canal offers a mode of water transportation to other towns up river.
Go to Glasgow. The nightlife in Bishopbriggs might include a movie at the local cinema and a stroll around city center. But the real nightlife will be found just a few short miles away in Glasgow proper. There you can enjoy a variety of cuisine, theaters, bars and modern clubs, and shopping. With the transportation system being so efficient, it is really a good option for such a short trip into town.
When to go
Anytime of the year will offer options near Bishopbriggs. Skiing is available nearby in the winter months. And with train and highway travel options, the summer months offer easy access to beaches. But if you have a car, it would be a good idea to take it as seats on the trains to the beach can be hard to come by.
