Newton Mearns is a suburban town located in East Renfrewshire, Scotland, about 7 miles from the centre of Glasgow, the nearest big city. Residents of Newton Mearns enjoy living in this quiet area and travelling to Glasgow for most of their shopping and entertainment, but the town is not without its own charms. One of its claims to fame is that it served as the setting for the novel Aztec Love Song by Marty Ross, published in 2009.
There are two railway stations, Patterton and Whitecraigs, serving Newton Mearns, both of which run trains to and from Glasgow Central Station. You can link by bus in Newton Mearns to Glasgow, Kilmarnock, and Ayre. By car, you can access the town from the M77 motorway.
Although Newton Mearns is not rife with entertainment options, there are some things to do there during the day. The town contains a few historical buildings, including Mearns Castle, which dates from the 15th century, and the Mearns Kirk, from 1813. The town is also famous for its parks, including Pubby Park, Broomburn Park, and Rouken Glen Park. There are also several rugby clubs and gold clubs in Newton Mearns. There are other recreation options in nearby towns as well, such as a public pool at the leisure centre in Grifnock.
Shopping in Newton Mearns is mostly limited to the town’s one large retail centre, The Avenue. This shopping centre runs along the high street, and contains 44 stores. There are also a decent number of small businesses in the town, some of which are shops and restaurants. As far as accommodations go, The Premier Inn Glasgow Newton Mearns, located off M77, has great reviews. There is a Beefeater Grill restaurant attached to the inn.
Like most suburban/ residential towns, Newton Mearns is fairly quiet at night. For evening entertainment such as clubbing and bar-hopping, taking a train or bus into Glasgow is probably the best option. This gritty industrial town has a reputation as a great centre for arts and music. There are lots of clubs and galleries in the Merchant City area especially. Glasgow’s most well-known clubs include Optimo and Numbers. Just remember, there are strict laws in Glagow that require pubs to stop serving at midnight, and clubs to stop serving at 3am, so even if you are traveling into the city you’ll want to get an early start on your evening!
