Nuneaton in Warwickshire – Eliot’s Inspiration
Best known for being the hometown of George Eliot, Nuneaton has had quite a roller-coaster ride in the last few centuries. From textile to brewing and bricks, Industrial Revolution helped this town thrive through the 17th and 18th centuries. Due to the presence of numerous weapons factories in town, it was targeted during the World War II which pretty much destroyed its town centre. Post a few other raids, it was rebuilt gradually. Aside of its rich history, Nuneaton is also home to lovely parks, shopping and recreation centres and boasts of a vibrant nightlife.
Getting to Nuneaton
The town is well connected by road and rail. The M6, M42, M69 motorways, the A5 trunk road and A47 connect the town with Hinckley and Leicester. The Nuneaton railway station is served by the West Coast Main Line that connects it to Birmingham and Leicester while another line connects it to Coventry.
Must Sees and Shopping
The Abbey Church of St Mary, though devoid of publicity is a great piece of history and is perfect for history buffs. The Museum and Art gallery in the Riversley Park serves as a stop-over for art enthusiasts.
The two major shopping centres in the town are Abbeygate Shopping Centre at the centre of the town and Ropewalk shopping centre that hosst a range of shops with products spanning clothing to electronics.
The town is home to a variety of Leisure centres like The Pingles Leisure Centre ( Click Here ) which includes indoor and outdoor swimming pools, dance studios, gym and a great track for athletes. The Jubilee Sports Centre and the Etone Sports Centre houses everything from basketball courts to football and hockey pitches. Nuneaton also has a Bowling club.

There are numerous walking routes that cover Nuneaton, Bedworth and Bulkington like Keresley, Caldecote, Weddington, Galley Common etc which are perfect to take in the green scenery while keeping your date with health and fitness.
The Riversley Park runs from the town centre to its outskirts and houses a museum and cafe. A great play area with a unique climbing tower and cycling and walking paths ensures a perfect day out for your family. The Whittleford Park houses 3 beautiful lakes and scenic meadows and ponds along with a play area for children and walking path and heritage trail for all.
