Stratford Upon Avon in Warwickshire

Stratford Upon Avon in Warwickshire is a picturesque town built on the shores of the River Avon. This quaint town is located 35 km south east of Birmingham and 13 km south west of Warwick and boasts over 800 years of history.

Stratford Upon Avon welcomes around 4.9 million visitors per year from all over the world and is easily reached by rail from Birmingham and London.

Most notably, Stratford Upon Avon is the birthplace of famous playwright and poet, William Shakespeare. As you would expect, there are many attractions dedicated to Shakespeare’s life and the theater. The town is home of the Royal Shakespeare Theater Company, an important cultural venue in Britain.

In addition, there are five houses that are related to Shakespeare’s life that have been made available to the public for tours to help visitors learn about his life and times. The first of these houses is William Shakespeare’s birthplace. This has been made into a museum of his life. There is also Hall’s Croft, the home of Shakespeare’s oldest daughter, Nash’s House and New Place, Shakespeare’s final home and where he died, the Anne Hathaway Cottage, the childhood home of Shakespeare’s wife, and Mary Arden’s Farm, the childhood home of Shakespeare’s mother.

There are also a couple of unique streets that should definitely be walked while in Stratford Upon Avon. The first is Henley Street one of the town’s oldest streets. It is the home of shopping, a variety of pavement cafes, and street performers.

The city was the main center for the slaughter and distribution of sheep in England and the wool trade boomed in the town until the end of the 19th century. Sheep Street which was the center of much of that activity is a must. Visitors can step back in time and experience Shakespearean England and the Tudor world by walking down the same cobble streets as Shakespeare.

Visitors to Stratford should also take a stroll along the river where there is always plenty to see and do. Life is never dull as there are many plays, festivals, and markets that take place in the town throughout the year.

If you are looking for something to do after dark, there are several pubs, bars, and clubs in the town. No. 1 Shakespeare Street is a favorite among visitors, as is the Dirty Duck, and the Old Thatch Tavern.

With so much to do and see, there is something for everyone who visits this fantastic city in Warwickshire.
